Monaco beats Angers to strengthen grip on European place

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 17:35:36 GMT

PARIS (AP) — With the race for European spots heating up, Monaco put daylight between itself and its main rivals in the French league with a 2-1 win at last-placed Angers on Sunday. With four games left to play, Monaco strengthened its grip on fourth spot behind the leading trio of PSG, Lens and Marseille by moving five points clear of Lille. The fourth-placed side in Ligue 1 qualifies for the Europa League. Lille lost ground on Monaco when Reims snapped a three-match losing streak thanks to Marshall Munetsi’s winner on Saturday. Trailing three points behind Lille, sixth-placed Rennes also misfired, losing 2-1 at Nice.Monaco did not play particularly well against Angers. But a superb shot from outside the box into the top right corner from Aleksandr Golovin coupled with Myron Boadu’s finish in the 60th minute were enough to secure the win, although Abdallah Sima’s header four minutes later ensured a tense finish. Leader PSG later traveled to struggling Troyes looking for ...

Virginia Tech helps track state’s big trees

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — Students squinting along a sunny stretch of sidewalk outside the Roanoke College library find a moment of cool refuge beneath the leafy shade of an old, but steady-growing champion.A Dutch elm tree outside Fintel Library is the largest of its species measured in Virginia, with a trunk that’s almost 21 feet around, stretching about 94 feet up toward the sun. Lofty branches spread 80 feet outward, casting friendly shade to passersby on a hot spring day.Using a long tape measure to note the tree’s width and spread, plus a laser tool to gauge height, volunteer tree steward Harry Van Guilder scribbled those arboreal measurements on his clipboard on a recent Wednesday. During the six year span since he last measured this state champion for the Virginia Big Trees program, Van Guilder said its trunk width grew at a rate of about an inch per year.“For a tree at this maturity, and as slow-growing as they are, it still amazes me,” he said. “It’s starting to decline a little...

BALTIMORE (AP) — As she raises two sons, there’s a time Jamyla Bennu and her husband, Pierre, like to keep sacred as a family: doing their hair. The styling methods range from barber cuts to dreadlocks; as the boys aged, the background noise evolved from “The Backyardigans” to “Saturday Night Live” episodes. But they always do it together.“One of my kids would be getting a haircut from dad and one was getting his hair twisted with mom, and we’d be watching a movie and stuff,” Bennu, 47, said. “That’s one thing I’m really happy is a part of our family culture: the fact that we do that grooming time together, and it’s part of our family together time.”Bennu’s hair care isn’t limited to her home in Northeast Baltimore. She runs Oyin Handmade, an “artisanal manufacturer of moisture-rich personal care products especially formulated for highly textured hair and dry skin.” The products are available at Whole Foods stores throughout Maryland, at independent retailers throughout the country a...

7Weather- Wow, what a beautiful weekend! Sunny and 70s yesterday. We’ll get more of the same today. The only difference- more clouds move in later filtering our sky. Still it’ll be a nice day! Some showers move in overnight. Luckily, the wet weather is quick to move out before the commute.Below you can see the clouds out ahead of some showers across the Great Lakes. That’s what we’ll switch up in the weather later today and overnight. The May sunshine is already going to work! As of 10:00 this morning, Boston was already above our average high for today. A west/northwest wind will push the mild air all the way to the coastline. It should be enough to keep the sea breeze away. Towns along the coast will get to the mid 70s. The warmest temperatures will be inland in the mid/upper 70s. The Cape will likely stay a few degrees below our inland towns, with a southwest wind coming off the cool ocean water later today.
