CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — When the International African American Museum opens to the public Tuesday in South Carolina, it becomes a new site of homecoming and pilgrimage for descendants of enslaved Africans whose arrival in the Western Hemisphere begins on the docks of the lowcountry coast.Overlooking the old wharf in Charleston at which nearly half of the enslaved population first entered North America, the 150,000-square-foot (14,000-square-meter) museum houses exhibits and artifacts exploring how African Americans’ labor, perseverance, resistance and cultures shaped the Carolinas, the nation and the world. It also includes a genealogy research center to help families trace their ancestors’ journey from point of arrival on the land. The opening happens at a time when the very idea of Black people’s survival through slavery, racial apartheid and economic oppression being quintessential to the American story is being challenged throughout the U.S. Leaders of the museum said its existen...

Russian troops withdraw from Moscow after mercenary revolt ends, trouble remains for Putin

(AP) - Russian troops deployed to protect the capital withdrew Sunday after a mercenary forces beat a retreat. But the short-lived revolt could have long-term consequences for President Vladimir Putin’s two-decade hold on power and his war in Ukraine.Putin’s image as a tough leader had already been badly bruised by the Ukraine war, which has dragged on for 16 months and claimed huge numbers of Russian troops. Saturday's march toward Moscow by forces under the command of his onetime protege, Yevgeny Prigozhin, exposed further weaknesses, many analysts said.It also meant some of the best forces fighting for Russia in Ukraine were pulled from that battlefield: Prigozhin's own Wagner troops and Chechen ones sent to stop them. After calling for an armed rebellion aimed at ousting Russia’s defense minister, Prigozhin and his fighters appeared to seize control of the Russian military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don that oversee fighting in Ukraine. They then advanced towards Moscow largel...

Third party a spoiler? Other parties driving voters awayRe: “Third-party candidate on state’s ballot could spoil Biden’s election,” June 17 commentaryMark Udall misses the point of national interest in third-party candidacies. It is not about tilting an election to a Democratic or Republican candidate. It is borne out of disgust with both parties and their years-long inability to capably govern. To assert that less than 10% of voters are “toss-up voters” ignores overwhelming evidence of shifts out of both major parties to non-partisanship — voters are desperate for new choices. Udall is doing the very thing voters are sick of — intransigently circling the wagons around his viewpoints. He contends a third-party candidacy would do nothing to solve our political challenges? Well, the two-party system has shown just how inept they are at the task. American voters are sick of politicians whose governing strategy is grounded in holding their ...

CBD is the most dominant cannabinoid in hemp flowers, but it’s far from the only compound in this plant. Besides secondary cannabinoids like CBG and CBN, hemp has dozens of flavorful terpenes. These aromatic compounds give each hemp strain its unique scent. Currently, scientists estimate there could be hundreds of terpenes in hemp flowers, many of which we still haven’t discovered.Geraniol is one of the many terpenes found in hemp strains. Although geraniol isn’t as common as myrcene, beta-caryophyllene, or limonene, it can influence the “background” of many hemp strains. As people get more experienced smoking hemp flowers or using full-spectrum CBD oils, they may appreciate geraniol’s nuanced flavors. What Is The Geraniol Terpene? As mentioned in the intro, geraniol is a secondary terpene in many hemp strains.
