Stock market today: Calm in the wake of 3rd bank failure

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:13:49 GMT

Early Wall Street trading is relatively subdued Monday in the wake of the third U.S. bank failure in less than two months.Futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow industrials shifted between small gains and losses, essentially unchanged before the opening bell. There are banking holidays around the globe Monday limiting some trading, but early reaction to the seizure of troubled First Republic Bank, which was sold on Monday to JPMorgan Chase Bank, appears orderly. San Francisco-based First Republic, once highly respected because of it’s wealthy client base, came under signficant strain due to surging interest rates. It invested in usually safe long-term bonds that can lose value when rates climb if they are sold before they mature. Many of the bank’s wealthy clients pulled their money First Republic after the collapse of Silicon Valley and Signature banks, creating a modern day bank run. First Republic becomes the second-biggest bank failure in U.S. history, behind only W...

From a synagogue bombing in Paris, to an Ottawa classroom 40 years later

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:13:49 GMT

Hassan Diab has been found guilty in the 1980 bombing of a Paris synagogue that killed four people and injured dozens more. This is the second time France has attempted to punish the Lebanese Canadian sociology professor for his alleged role in the attack— the evidence of which has been described as flimsy at best.Leyland Cecco is a reporter for The Guardian. He said the last time, Diab was extradited and jailed in France before charges were dropped, prompting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to criticize the case and the extradition.“There’s a lot of frustration that Canada’s Extradition Act doesn’t give much latitude to the people early on who would determine whether or not that case was even a good one. And I think Diab’s case highlights where it falls short.”But now that a court has convicted, will France ask Canada for Diab a second time? If they do, will Canada comply? Will this case test the relationship between the two countries, and Canada’s policy on extraditions in gene...

She had deliberately chosen a doctor of color, following a Facebook group recommendation and her own research, and so this was not the experience she was expecting.“They let me know my appointments coincided with when she got called into the hospital, so we switched it up,” Lott said. “After that, I definitely felt taken care of from top to bottom.”Black mothers continue to experience health disparities and inequities during and after pregnancy in Texas and across the U.S. To raise awareness on the subject, Black Mamas Matter Alliance created "Black Maternal Health Week" or BMHW.
